Morocco’s electric power production climbs by 2.3% as renewables surge

In the first eight months of 2024, Morocco saw a 2.3% increase in national electricity production, up from a modest 0.7% gain in the same period last year, according to data from the Ministry of Economy and Finance’s Department of Studies and Financial Forecasts (DEPF). This growth comes largely from a notable uptick in renewable energy output, specifically in line with Law 13-09, which saw an impressive 39.3% surge. Meanwhile, private electricity production saw a slight rise of 0.4% compared to August 2023, further supporting overall growth.

Electricity production by the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) is also showing signs of stabilization. The rate of decline, which stood at 9.4% last year, has moderated, reaching a 2.5% decrease by the end of August 2024—improving from a sharper 7.3% drop in June.

On the international front, electricity imports jumped 27.2% by the end of August 2024, following a 39.3% increase last year. Meanwhile, electricity exports contracted by 22.3%, though this is a slight recovery from the previous year’s sharper 33.7% decline.

In terms of net called energy—reflecting the actual energy utilized nationwide—the increase has been steady, showing a 3.3% rise, closely mirroring the 3.5% growth recorded last year.

Electricity consumption also picked up in Morocco during the third quarter of 2024, with an increase of 5.8% over July and August. This rise is largely driven by high, medium, and very high-tension power demand outside of distribution networks, which grew by 7.4%. Additionally, energy consumption rose 5.5% among households and 5% for distributor networks.

Overall, electricity consumption grew by 0.7% by the end of August 2024, reversing a 1.2% drop seen in June. However, this pace is somewhat lower than the 4.3% growth recorded in August 2023, highlighting a year of more tempered growth as demand stabilizes across various sectors.

These shifts underscore Morocco’s dynamic energy landscape, where renewable energy advancements and strategic imports help balance the country’s energy needs amidst fluctuating domestic production levels.
