OCP and UNIDO join forces to drive Africa’s green transformation

OCP Group is deepening its international partnerships to drive a low-carbon future, with a new agreement that underscores its global ambitions. On the sidelines of a major forum in Riyadh, the world leader in plant nutrition solutions signed a five-year cooperation deal with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The partnership aims to advance sustainable agriculture, industrial decarbonization, and technological innovation across Africa and beyond.

The agreement outlines a comprehensive roadmap that includes support for integrated agricultural value chains, development of agribusiness, promotion of green hydrogen and green ammonia, modernization of industrial zones, and expanded collaboration in artificial intelligence and Industry 4.0 technologies. Skills development and inclusive training are also central to the partnership, aligning with a shared commitment to sustainable and equitable growth.

For Hanane Mourchid, OCP’s Chief Sustainability & Innovation Officer, the collaboration is an extension of a clear vision: to use sustainability as a lever for structural transformation across the African continent. UNIDO Director General Gerd Müller echoed that sentiment, describing the agreement as a practical response to Africa’s intertwined agricultural and climate challenges.

This new alliance fits squarely within OCP’s broader green strategy, which includes a $13 billion investment plan through 2027. The group is focusing heavily on renewable energy, unconventional water sources, and the production of low-carbon fertilizers. By 2025, OCP aims to meet all of its water needs without drawing from conventional freshwater sources, relying instead on an ambitious desalination program expected to reach 560 million cubic meters annually by 2027.

More than a strategic partnership, this agreement reinforces OCP’s position as a global force in the green transition. It also signals a long-term vision for reshaping agriculture and industry in Africa around sustainable, low-emission models that can address both climate imperatives and food security.
