Between June 5 and September 5, 2024, more than 2.8 million passengers, including 2 million Moroccans living abroad (MRE), and 662,000 vehicles passed through Moroccan ports as part of the “Marhaba 2024” operation, according to the Ministry of Transport and Logistics. This marks a 5.5% increase in total passengers, a 17% rise in MRE, and a 9.5% growth in vehicle traffic compared to the same period in 2023.
To improve the maritime aspect of the “Marhaba” operation, the ministry mobilized 29 ships, conducting 535 weekly trips with a combined weekly capacity to transport around 500,000 passengers and 130,000 vehicles. The ministry also conducted thorough technical inspections of all ships before the operation’s launch to ensure compliance with international safety standards, and it continues to monitor service quality onboard.
Tangier Med Port handled the majority of the traffic, welcoming 1.62 million passengers and 427,000 vehicles, accounting for 57% of the total traffic. Other major ports included Tangier Ville (23% of total traffic), Nador (19%), and Al Hoceima (1%).
The peak inbound traffic was recorded on August 3 and 4, with around 80,000 passengers and 20,000 vehicles arriving. On the outbound side, the last ten days of August saw a significant surge, with 460,000 passengers and 103,000 vehicles departing Morocco for Europe.
The ministry highlighted the crucial role of pre-booking tickets with fixed dates and times, which helped streamline traffic flow, especially on high-demand maritime routes such as “Tangier Med – Algeciras” and “Tangier Ville – Tarifa.”
