The 10th edition of the National Malhoun Art Days kicked off on Thursday in Salé, under the theme “The Art of Malhoun: An Authentic Heritage with Moroccan Depth and Global Reach.”
The opening ceremony, organized by the Driss Ben Mamoun Association for Creation and Research in Malhoun Art in Salé, in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, featured a performance by the National Orchestra of Malhoun Art, led by Mohamed El Ouali. The event showcased several renowned artists, including Mohamed Sami Ayachi, Hiba Lahlou, Naima Tahiri, Sara Zouhri, and El Bachir El Khaddar.
Malhoun, a poetic-musical expression, has deep roots in Moroccan culture. Originating from the Tafilalet region in southeastern Morocco, it initially flourished within the local zaouias before spreading to major cities, where it was embraced by artisan guilds.
During the opening night, held in celebration of Malhoun’s inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage List, attendees enjoyed a selection of masterpieces from this unique art form.
The 10th National Malhoun Art Days program includes artistic evenings, workshops, and a symposium on Malhoun art.
Malhoun was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list during the 18th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, held from December 4-9 last year in Kasane, Botswana.
