Strategic talks in Lagos: Final steps toward the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is holding a regional workshop from October 8 to 11 in Lagos, Nigeria, aimed at reviewing and validating the Host Government Agreement (HGA) for the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline project.

This workshop is part of the ambitious pipeline initiative spearheaded by King Mohammed VI of Morocco and former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, with continued support from Nigeria’s current President, Bola Tinubu. It follows multiple rounds of negotiations on the Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) and the Host Government Agreement (HGA), previously held in Rabat, Marrakech, and Abidjan.

The event is co-organized by Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), both overseeing the pipeline’s development. Experts from the thirteen countries through which the pipeline will pass, along with government officials and national oil companies, are all in attendance to contribute to the finalization of the HGA.

The objective of this workshop is to finalize the Host Government Agreement that will be signed between each participating country and the project company. According to an ONHYM representative, the presence of experts and delegates from the involved nations underscores their commitment to the success of this strategic and transformative project.

The Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline, a flagship project symbolizing the strength of South-South cooperation, is expected to significantly contribute to the economic and social development of the region by fostering the growth of various industries across West Africa.
