Tayeb Hamdi : Mu Variant, Not a Source of Concern in Morocco

The Coronavirus’ new variant, Mu, is not a source of concern for the time being in Morocco, or for the rest of the world, said, on Friday, doctor and researcher in health policies and systems, Tayeb Hamdi.

This statement comes in light of available scientific data and experts’ opinions concerning the COVID-19 pandemic situation throughout the world, the researcher added. The widespread of this variant, first appeared in Colombia, remains weak at the international level, revealed Mr. Hamdi, noting that it only represents 0.1% of the new COVID-19 infections.

He also stressed that the World Health Organization (WHO) classified Mu in the category of variants of interest that might manifest ability to resist antibodies from vaccination or a previous COVID-19 infection.

These hypotheses, however, are founded on in-lab preliminary studies and do not consist of any profound scrutiny, he pointed out, asserting that the new variant is, therefore, not a source of concern. It is imperative to comply with preventive measures, such as social distancing, wearing a mask, massive vaccination in order to curb the spread of the virus and prevent the emergence of new mutations, he affirmed.
