Backed by the high-level strategic vision of King Mohammed VI, the Moroccan Armed Forces have taken a major step forward with the official opening of the TATA Advanced Systems Morocco (TASM) factory in Berrechid. Inaugurated on Tuesday, this state-of-the-art facility is the result of a trilateral collaboration between Morocco’s National Defense Administration, India’s Ministry of Defense, and TATA Advanced Systems Limited. The launch follows an investment agreement signed in September 2024, signaling a clear commitment to boosting Morocco’s defense manufacturing capabilities.
Located in the heart of the Berrechid industrial zone, the new factory has already begun production of the WhAP 8×8 armored combat vehicle. Designed to equip Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces, the vehicle also targets the growing international demand for modern military hardware. Beyond simply assembling military vehicles, this facility is intended to serve as the foundation for a robust and autonomous industrial defense base in Morocco—one capable of innovation, local job creation, and long-term growth in a high-tech sector.
From the outset, TASM is operating with a 35% local content rate, with plans to gradually increase this figure to 50%. Achieving this goal will depend on a strong commitment to continuous training and deeper collaboration with Moroccan suppliers. The project is part of a broader strategy to foster a locally rooted defense ecosystem that can innovate, compete globally, and support national sovereignty.
The economic impact of the new plant is already being felt. At full capacity, it is expected to create 90 direct jobs and roughly 250 indirect positions, contributing significantly to the region’s industrial development. The facility is also positioned as a key training ground for young Moroccan talent, offering hands-on experience in advanced defense technologies and maintenance operations.
Outfitted with cutting-edge equipment, the Berrechid plant is set to become a regional hub for both production and export, particularly focused on serving African markets. Its launch aligns with King Mohammed VI’s broader ambition to establish Morocco as a sovereign, competitive player in the global defense industry, with an emphasis on South-South cooperation.
TATA Advanced Systems Limited brings to the table a wealth of technical expertise, international experience, and a well-established global network. Crucially, the company is also leading a structured knowledge transfer process, helping Moroccan teams develop the skills needed to sustain and grow this new defense manufacturing base.
