Music fans in Casablanca will gather on 15 and 16 May for the Moroccan Festival of Andalusian Music, which will officially launch the new Théâtre l’Hermitage. The theatre opens on 14 May and will host the festival’s fourth edition.
The event is organised by the Moroccan Association of Andalusian Music (AMMA). It runs under the theme “Culture: A Lever for Sustainable Development and Influence”, linking the festival to Morocco’s strategy to use cultural heritage to support economic growth and international reach.
The programme brings together leading artists of the Andalusian tradition and contemporary performers. On Friday 15 May, the Orchestre Andalou de Rabat led by Mohamed Amine Debbi will perform with Haj Mohamed Bajeddoub. The Orchestre Andalou de Tétouan, conducted by Fahd Benkirane, will also take part, with guest artists Bahaa Ronda, Hakim from Spain and Bilal El Houaj.
On Saturday 16 May, the Orchestre Andalou de Fès led by Mohamed Briouel will headline the second night. The group Nass El Ghiwane will also perform, mixing Andalusian music with Moroccan folk sounds.
The festival is supported by the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, the Loterie Nationale and Les Eaux Minérales d’Oulmès. The partnership shows continued cooperation between public institutions and private companies to support Morocco’s cultural and creative sector.
Fatima Mabchour, Founding President of AMMA, said: “This fourth edition embodies our commitment to making cultural heritage a real lever for sustainable development.”
The Loterie Nationale said 100% of its funds are reinvested into social and solidarity projects, including support for national culture.
The opening of Théâtre l’Hermitage is expected to expand Casablanca’s cultural scene and position the city as a major arts destination alongside Rabat and Marrakech. The festival will serve as the theatre’s first large public event.
