Morocco joins elite military UNITAS, only African and Arab nation participating

Morocco is set to become the only Arab and African nation participating in this year’s edition of UNITAS, the long-running multinational military exercise led by the United States. Scheduled for September, the operation will bring together 8,000 troops from 26 countries and take place across several key military installations along the U.S. East Coast.

At the heart of the drills will be the USS Harry S. Truman, one of the U.S. Navy’s most powerful aircraft carriers. Exercises will be staged at major military hubs including Mayport in Florida, Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, and Norfolk, Virginia. Overseen directly by the U.S. Navy, the objective is to enhance strategic coordination among allied forces in the face of evolving global threats.

For Morocco, its inclusion in UNITAS further reinforces its strong military ties with Washington and signals its growing role in maritime security—not only within its region but also on the international stage. The Kingdom’s involvement highlights its commitment to joint defense efforts and its rising profile as a security partner.

Rear Admiral Carlos Sardielo, head of U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command, emphasized the significance of such partnerships. He described UNITAS as a key platform for building trust and interoperability among participating nations, especially as the global security landscape becomes more complex.

The operation will conclude on October 6 with a formal ceremony commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States Navy. Military delegations from across the globe are expected to attend, with Morocco invited to take part in the official celebrations—marking both a symbolic and strategic moment in its defense diplomacy.
