INTERPOL is in the spotlight this week as its 93rd General Assembly gets underway in Marrakech, where the organization will elect a new Executive Committee to steer its strategic direction until the next session. This committee, which plays a key governance role between assemblies, is set to welcome a new president and several fresh members as current terms come to an end.
The gathering, running through November 27, is the most significant event on INTERPOL’s calendar, bringing together top officials from all 196 member countries. With a packed agenda, delegates are set to vote on vital issues that will shape the organization’s long-term priorities—ranging from operational strategies and resource allocation to strengthening international cooperation.
Marrakech is also serving as a platform for discussions on the most urgent global security threats. Delegates are addressing transnational criminal networks, the takedown of large-scale fraud operations, efforts to build global policing capacity, and initiatives to advance gender inclusion in law enforcement. A pilot initiative known as the “Silver Notice” is under review, and INTERPOL is expected to issue a strong call in support of the United Nations Convention on Cybercrime.
The opening ceremony on Monday was marked by a high-profile turnout. Among the speakers were Abdellatif Hammouchi, Morocco’s Director General of National Security and Domestic Intelligence, and outgoing INTERPOL President Major General Ahmed Naser Al-Raisi. The event also welcomed INTERPOL Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza, several Moroccan ministers, and senior figures from the judicial and law enforcement sectors.
A video presentation highlighted the evolution of Morocco’s police forces over the years, underlining the country’s expertise in counterterrorism and organized crime. Through this showcase, Morocco reinforced its image as a trusted and capable security partner on the international stage.
