Moroccan diaspora sent a total of MAD 122 billion ($13.4 billion) back home in 2025, up 2.6% on the previous year, according to the Foreign Exchange Office.
Most of the money goes straight to families, with only about 10% invested in property and 15% saved. The rest is used to cover everyday needs and support loved ones.
Sending money to Morocco isn’t cheap. In 2023, Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita pointed out that for every $200 sent from Africa, $16 is lost in fees, compared with less than $10 in Asia.
Bank Al Maghrib expects remittances to keep rising, forecasting they’ll hit MAD 130 billion ($14.25 billion) next year and could reach MAD 448 billion ($49.1 billion) by 2027, almost enough to cover five and a half months of imports.
The government and King Mohammed VI have been working to make life easier for the Moroccan diaspora, including streamlining admin and supporting business ventures. Direct housing aid schemes aim to make it simpler for Moroccans at home and overseas to buy their first home.
