The city of Fez is preparing to launch a new cultural and entertainment programme to bring more activity to one of its busiest historic squares.

Local authorities said events will begin on Thursday, 26 March, at Bab Boujloud Square from 5pm.

The project is led by the city council in partnership with the Fes-Sais Association, under the supervision of the regional authorities. It forms part of wider efforts to boost Fez’s appeal to visitors, as tourism in Morocco continues to recover.

Organisers say the programme will include storytelling, theatre, music and street parades. The aim is to keep the square active and give people more reasons to spend time there.

Events will then run every week from Friday to Sunday. Officials hope a regular schedule will draw both residents and tourists, and increase activity in public spaces.

The initiative comes as Fez sees new international links and funding. Discover Airlines has added the city to its route network, offering more direct flights from Europe.

The city has also gained global attention after winning a $1m award in the Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Challenge. The funding will support a project to improve movement and access in the medina, while protecting the historic site.

Officials are urging residents to take part, saying they want to create a lively atmosphere that reflects the character of the city.
