Casablanca will host the fourth International Improvisation Tournament (TIIC) on 8 and 9 May, bringing professional theatre teams from Europe to perform in front of local audiences.

The event is organised by the Fondation Al Mada and theatre company Caz’impro. Shows will take place at the Villa des Arts de Casablanca at 8pm on both nights.

This year, the tournament is bigger. For the first time, professional teams are taking part, including performers who recently competed at the Improvisation World Cup in Belgium. Morocco will compete against teams from Switzerland, France and Belgium.

The matches follow the “match d’improvisation” format. Referees give the themes and control the game. The audience votes after every scene to decide the winner.

A circular stage will be used this year, inspired by the Canadian improvisation rink. The idea is to bring performers closer to the audience and make the show more engaging.

Caz’impro was founded in 2018 to promote improvisation theatre in Morocco. The troupe performs regularly in Casablanca and has taken part in festivals in Spain and Switzerland.

The format began in 1977 in Montreal. Theatre creators Robert Gravel and Yvon Leduc designed it to feel like a sports match. Teams wear jerseys, matches have periods and referees can give penalties.

Organisers say the event aims to connect Moroccan performers with international talent and promote cultural exchange through improvisation.
