Morocco has become the first country in Africa and the Arab world to launch BYD’s 1.5 megawatt Flash Charging technology, as the Chinese carmaker brings its premium electric vehicle brand DENZA to the country. The launch, announced by BYD’s exclusive importer Auto Nejma, also makes Morocco the tenth market in the world to receive the new charging system.

The company says the technology can charge a vehicle’s battery from 10% to 70% in five minutes. It can reach 97% charge in nine minutes, helping address one of the biggest challenges facing electric vehicles, long charging times.

Auto Nejma has also opened two DENZA showrooms in Casablanca and Rabat. The sites will offer vehicle sales, financing and after-sales services.

Four models will be available in Morocco. They include the Z9GT, offered as a fully electric car or a plug-in hybrid, the D9 people carrier, and the B5 and B8 plug-in hybrid SUVs. A fifth model, the DENZA Z sports car, will arrive later.

The Z9GT uses three electric motors and four-wheel steering. The system allows the car to make tight turning manoeuvres and move sideways when parking.

Other technologies include BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, an ultra-high voltage electrical system, DiSus intelligent suspension and advanced driver assistance features.

Auto Nejma said the launch is part of a wider plan to build a premium electric vehicle ecosystem in Morocco. The company plans to invest in charging stations and related services alongside vehicle sales.

BYD sells its vehicles in 121 countries. The company plans to install more than 6,000 Flash Charging stations outside China by the end of 2026, including more than 3,000 in Europe. Morocco is one of the first international markets chosen for the rollout of the new charging network.
