People across Morocco will be able to watch a partial solar eclipse on 12 August as the Sun sets. The eclipse will start at around 6:44pm and end at about 8:40pm. The Moon will cover different parts of the Sun depending on where you are. In Tangier, more than 90% of the Sun will be hidden. In Casablanca, about 87% of the Sun will be covered.
The total eclipse will only be visible from a narrow path crossing Greenland, Iceland, Spain and part of north-eastern Portugal. Morocco, like several other countries in Europe and North Africa, will only see the partial eclipse.
This will be the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe since 2006, making it a major event for astronomers and skywatchers, even though totality will not be visible from Morocco.
Anyone planning to watch the eclipse should never look directly at the Sun without proper protection. Safe viewing requires ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses or approved solar filters. Looking at the Sun without them can cause permanent eye damage.
