The recently introduced 20 dirham (DH) banknote, released to mark the Youth Day celebrations, showcases Morocco’s rich architectural heritage and its ongoing sociocultural development, as highlighted by Hassan Regraga, the Director of Dar As-Sikkah, during a press briefing on Thursday in Rabat.
“This new 20 DH banknote, which complements the latest series of Moroccan banknotes and coins, underscores the significant efforts led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in preserving Morocco’s architectural legacy and promoting its sociocultural advancement. The design centers around themes of culture, art, youth, and sports,” Regraga explained to the media.
The banknote’s theme is vividly illustrated through graphic depictions of some of Morocco’s iconic sites: the Grand Theater of Rabat, the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMVI), a sports complex grandstand, and a stylized view of the Kasbah of Aït-Ben-Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Produced entirely by Moroccan experts at Dar As-Sikkah, just like the 200, 100, and 50 DH notes from the same series, this 20 DH banknote is equipped with the latest security features. These include a color-changing security thread with dynamic effects, tactile raised patterns for the visually impaired, and an iridescent strip on the reverse side, ensuring both innovation and security, as noted by Regraga.
Bank Al Maghrib officially introduced the new 20 DH note into circulation on Wednesday. The front of the note features a portrait of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Royal Coat of Arms, and architectural motifs inspired by traditional Moroccan gates, alongside a stylized view of the historic Al Qaraouiyine University in Fez.
The reverse side continues the artistic homage with representations of the Grand Theater of Rabat, the MMVI, a sports complex grandstand, and the iconic Kasbah of Aït-Ben-Haddou.
