Afriquia SMDC, the flagship subsidiary of Akwa Group and Morocco’s leading fuel distributor, has secured a groundbreaking contract. On December 5, 2024, the company, led by Khalid Mouchtaki since April 2024, was awarded a pivotal tender by the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE). The contract, worth a staggering 2.443 billion dirhams, covers the supply and delivery of standard and special fuel oil to ONEE’s various facilities.

A strategic victory over fierce competition

In a heated race, Afriquia SMDC outpaced its main rival, Atlas Sahara—a subsidiary of Derhem Holding—to clinch this deal. Atlas Sahara’s bid, estimated at 3.97 billion dirhams, failed to secure the contract, clearing the way for Afriquia. Headquartered in Ain Sebaâ, Casablanca, Afriquia SMDC boasts a robust network of service stations spanning Morocco, accounting for 19% of the national network, according to the Competition Council. Its logistical strength and competitive pricing strategy have solidified its market dominance.

An energy landscape in transition

The contract comes at a time when ONEE is undergoing a significant energy transformation. Over the past decade, the organization has been gradually reducing its reliance on fuel oil for electricity generation, shifting toward renewable sources like solar and wind energy. During a recent parliamentary session, Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition, highlighted remarkable progress: renewable energy capacity now stands at 5,300 megawatts, a 7.3% increase under the current government. Wind energy, now surpassing hydropower, underscores the nation’s shift toward greener alternatives.

A win-win for Afriquia and Akwa Group

This deal cements Afriquia SMDC’s leadership position and showcases the resilience of its parent company, Akwa Group, led by the Akhannouch family. The contract adds to a string of achievements for the company, which continues to expand its footprint in the critical fuel distribution sector. It also demonstrates Afriquia’s agility in adapting to a rapidly evolving energy landscape where fossil fuels are increasingly supplemented by renewable energy sources.
