Morocco has claimed the crown as Africa’s leading tourist destination, achieving a historic milestone in 2024 with 17.4 million visitors—a remarkable 20% increase compared to the previous year. The announcement, made by the Ministry of Tourism, cements the country’s status as a rising powerhouse in global travel.

A goal achieved two years ahead of schedule !

The Kingdom’s tourism roadmap had set an ambitious target for 2026, but Morocco smashed expectations by achieving it in 2024. The growth was driven by a 23% surge in international arrivals and a 17% rise in visits from Moroccan expatriates.

This surge brought in a staggering 104 billion dirhams (10 billion euros) in revenue by November 2024, a 7% increase compared to 2023. Tourism now accounts for 7% of Morocco’s GDP and supports 827,000 direct jobs, underscoring its strategic role in the nation’s economy.

Bold strategies backed by major investments

Morocco’s meteoric rise is no accident. A meticulously crafted tourism strategy, supported by a 600-million-euro budget for 2023-2026, focused on three key pillars:

  1. Expanding air connectivity: 120 new international routes were added, bringing the total to 705.
  2. Boosting infrastructure: Substantial investments in hotels, resorts, and other tourist facilities elevated the visitor experience.
  3. Global promotion: An aggressive marketing campaign positioned Morocco as a must-visit destination for travelers worldwide.

These efforts have modernized the sector while diversifying the tourism offerings to include cultural events, ecotourism, and business travel.

A landmark year with global prospects

The year 2024 marked a turning point for Moroccan tourism. Hosting the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) provided a unique opportunity to showcase the country’s hospitality, while preparations for co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal are already putting Morocco on the international stage.

From the enchanting medinas of Marrakech to the serene blue streets of Chefchaouen, from Agadir’s sun-kissed beaches to the majestic Atlas Mountains, Morocco’s rich heritage and world-class infrastructure continue to captivate visitors from every corner of the globe.

Sustaining momentum for the future

As Morocco basks in its 2024 triumphs, the next challenge lies in sustaining growth while prioritizing sustainable and inclusive tourism development. By balancing economic gains with environmental and cultural preservation, the Kingdom aspires to set a global benchmark in tourism excellence.

With its sights firmly set on the future, Morocco is poised to write a new chapter in its tourism story—a perfect blend of tradition and modernity that promises to enchant the world for years to come.
