The Guercif-Nador highway is beginning to take shape, marking a significant milestone for Morocco’s Oriental region. Stretching 105 kilometers, this strategic infrastructure project will link the Nador West Med port complex to the national highway network, enhancing the region’s logistical competitiveness and economic appeal.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize the regional road network and better integrate the northeastern provinces with the rest of the country. By improving traffic flow, easing access to national and international markets, and stimulating industrial and commercial activity, the project is set to be a game-changer. With a total investment of 7.9 billion dirhams—plus an additional 2 billion allocated for upgrading roads leading to the port—it represents a transformative development for both the local and national economy.
One of the highway’s key benefits will be the significant reduction in travel time between Nador and major cities, ensuring smoother freight transport. As trade volumes linked to the port continue to rise, a modern highway is essential to accommodate the increasing flow of trucks and containers while also cutting logistics costs. This project aligns with Morocco’s broader strategy to optimize transportation services and boost export competitiveness.
Beyond improving connectivity, the highway is expected to drive job creation and promote the development of new industrial zones along its route. By providing faster access to the country’s main economic hubs, it will attract businesses, facilitate workforce mobility, and contribute to regional economic growth.
On the technical front, the Guercif-Nador highway involves extensive infrastructure work, including over 30 million cubic meters of earthworks, 15 major engineering structures, elevated and underground passages, and strategically placed interchanges to ensure smooth connections with national and regional roads. Additionally, rest areas and toll stations will be incorporated to enhance user comfort and safety.
Construction is progressing steadily, with the project divided into three sections. The third section has already reached 35% completion, thanks to the strong involvement of local expertise. For the first two sections, land clearance has been finalized, and tendering procedures are underway to initiate construction. The entire project is scheduled for completion by 2028.
This highway represents a major step forward for the Oriental region, reinforcing its role as an economic crossroads while significantly improving residents’ quality of life. By facilitating travel and attracting investment, it serves as a vital tool for sustainable development and Morocco’s integration into broader national and international economic dynamics.
