From September 27-29, 2024, Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane (AUI) will host the “HPS Innovation Weekend.” Organized by AUI’s Office of Employability and Entrepreneurship in partnership with Hightech Payment Systems (HPS), the event will focus on applying artificial intelligence (AI) across four key areas in the payment industry: operational efficiency, accessibility (physical and sensory), products and services, and non-banking industries.
Throughout the weekend, teams of students will tackle innovative challenges, guided by mentors, before presenting their solutions to a jury of industry leaders from HPS, Bank of Africa, Attijariwafa Bank, Société Générale Maroc, BNP Paribas, and the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Morocco (CFCIM). This diverse jury underscores HPS’s commitment to a customer-centric approach and its dedication to fostering open innovation.
A particular emphasis will be placed on creating AI-driven solutions that enhance accessibility for individuals with visual and hearing impairments, reflecting the event’s mission to leverage technology for tangible social impact.
Deborah Bartlett, Director of AUI’s Office of Employability and Entrepreneurship, highlighted the importance of the event for students, saying: “The HPS Innovation Weekend offers our students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in AI solutions, which are becoming essential in many industries. It allows industry leaders to discover fresh ideas and gives students practical insights needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving technological world.”
The competition will conclude on September 29 with the selection of the top three teams, who will be awarded financial prizes. Additional rewards include support from CFCIM’s Kluster and fast-tracked entry into Bank of Africa’s BlueSpace incubator, equipping students with the necessary skills and resources to bring their projects to life.
Winners will also visit HPS’s offices at Casa Nearshore, where they’ll have the chance to meet top executives and showcase their innovative projects.
Abdeslam Alaoui Smaili, CEO of HPS, emphasized the importance of nurturing future talent: “At HPS, we strongly believe in collaboration and supporting young talent. We are excited to see students contribute original ideas and creativity, crucial for shaping the future of AI and payments. I encourage them to seize this opportunity, push boundaries, and innovate.”
