Alstom’s $10M boost turns Fès into a key rail tech hub

Alstom is deepening its industrial roots in Morocco with a fresh investment of 100 million dirhams aimed at expanding its manufacturing capabilities at its Fès facility. The announcement, made on December 9, follows an agreement signed with the Moroccan government during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to the country in October 2024.

At the heart of this expansion is a global first: the launch of a multi-platform production line entirely dedicated to manufacturing train driver consoles. These advanced components will be used in international railway projects, positioning Morocco as a key player in Alstom’s global supply chain.

This latest development is part of a broader strategy to boost industrial capacity and technological expertise. Alongside the new console production line, Alstom plans to double its output of transformers and open a new engineering and development office in Fès. These steps are designed to enhance local talent, foster innovation, and strengthen the company’s operations across the Africa, Middle East, and Central Asia (AMECA) region.

The expansion is expected to create over 200 direct jobs, giving a significant boost to Morocco’s rail industry ecosystem, which already plays a vital role in Alstom’s international operations. This move further cements the Kingdom’s status as a strategic hub for the group’s activities.

With more than 1,400 employees in Morocco, Alstom has already delivered several landmark projects in the country. These include supplying 270 Citadis trams to Rabat and Casablanca, 12 high-speed Avelia Euroduplex trains for the Tangier–Casablanca route, and 77 Prima locomotives. Since 2020, the company has invested nearly 200 million dirhams into its Fès site, which houses Morocco’s first transformer production line.

This new wave of investment signals Alstom’s long-term commitment to industrial development in Morocco, not only as a production base but also as a growing center of engineering and innovation.
