Chinese auto giant BYD is doubling down on its commitment to Morocco’s electric mobility market, marking another step in its global expansion. Already the world’s top seller of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, the company is leveraging its partnership with Moroccan distributor Auto Nejma to gain a stronger foothold in a country where diesel vehicles still dominate the roads.
At the forefront of this push is Adil Bennani, the managing director of Auto Nejma, who is steering the rollout of BYD models across the Kingdom. Central to their strategy is BYD’s plug-in hybrid DM-i technology, promoted as a game-changer for fuel efficiency and performance. According to the company, most drivers who start with hybrids eventually transition to fully electric vehicles, drawn in by the cost savings and smoother ride.
While there’s no official word yet on building a manufacturing plant in Morocco, BYD hasn’t ruled out the idea. A previous agreement signed back in 2017 to develop a full electric transport ecosystem never came to fruition, largely due to unfavorable conditions at the time. Now, with Morocco positioning itself as a strategic gateway between Southern Europe and Africa, the potential for industrial investment is back on the table.
For now, BYD is focused on infrastructure. The company plans to distinguish itself by rolling out ultra-fast charging technology capable of delivering up to 400 kilometers of range in just five minutes. With charging power projected to reach as high as 1,000 kW, the system—branded as “flash charging”—could be a game-changer. The long-term vision includes solar-powered stations equipped with storage batteries along Morocco’s major highways, developed in coordination with local authorities.
This approach aligns with BYD’s broader ambitions. With over 65,000 patents and a presence in more than 100 countries, the group has grown into one of the world’s most powerful industrial forces. Employing over a million people globally, BYD is now also moving upmarket. Its premium brand Denza, already established in other markets, is expected to make its debut in Morocco soon, signaling a new phase in the brand’s evolution.
