The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will still feature 24 teams, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said, putting an end to reports that the tournament would be expanded.
The competition will be hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the format will not change.
“The tournament will continue with 24 national teams,” he said. Reports claiming the number of teams would increase are “inaccurate”.
The tournament will be played in June and July 2027. The qualifying campaign will start in September and October 2026.
CAF also announced on Thursday a temporary agreement covering the global commercial rights for its major competitions. The deal includes media, broadcasting and sponsorship rights for the 2028, 2032 and 2036 editions of AFCON.
The governing body also shared figures from AFCON 2025, which was held in Morocco. The tournament drew more than 3.2 billion TV viewers and six billion digital views. CAF said it became the third most-watched international national team tournament in the world, behind only the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship.
