A new military vehicle that started life as a civilian model has been unveiled by Renault Group and Thales at the Eurosatory defence show in Paris. The vehicle is called the 4 TROOP and it is designed to give armed forces a cheaper and faster way to add new vehicles to their fleets. It combines Renault’s vehicle manufacturing experience with Thales’ communication, cybersecurity and battlefield technology.
Unlike traditional military vehicles, the 4 TROOP is based on Renault’s existing civilian vehicle platforms. The design can be adapted for different sizes, from SUVs to light commercial vans.
Renault says this approach could reduce costs and speed up production. It would also make maintenance easier by allowing armies to use Renault’s existing service and support network.
The vehicle uses a hybrid Four Wheel Drive system. It can switch to a silent mode when needed and still keep a long operating range. It is also fitted with a Vehicle-to-Load system, allowing it to power equipment such as communications gear directly from the vehicle.
Inside, the 4 TROOP is designed to work as a mobile command centre.
The vehicle uses Thales’ Combat Digital Platform, a secure system that processes large amounts of battlefield data while on the move. It is also connected to the French Army’s SCORPION network, allowing it to share information with other military units.
The system can control and coordinate drones and ground robots and includes artificial intelligence tools that help crews make decisions more quickly. Multiple sensors give commanders a better picture of what is happening around them.
Because of its flexible design, the vehicle can be used for a wide range of tasks, including reconnaissance missions, surveillance, command operations, logistics support and the deployment of robotic systems.
Franck Naro, Vice President of Vehicle Engineering and Project Development at Renault Group, said: “With this Multi-Role Civil Vehicle approach, we are exploring a pragmatic and sovereign take on operational mobility. By capitalizing on our proven civilian platforms and industrial capacity, we offer an agile, resilient, and instantly deployable solution.”
Christophe Salomon, Executive Vice President of Secure Information and Communication Systems at Thales, said: “More than a tech evolution, 4 TROOP embodies the fusion of Thales’ expertise with onboard digital systems. This innovation opens the door to a new generation of dual-use solutions where data acts as a performance multiplier, capable of backing both domestic security missions and high-intensity conflicts.”
Neither company has announced when the vehicle could enter production.
