Canadian actor Donald Sutherland, renowned for his roles in “The Dirty Dozen” and the “Hunger Games” series, has died at the age of 88, his son Kiefer Sutherland announced on Thursday.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my father,” Kiefer Sutherland wrote on social media.
During a press conference on Thursday afternoon, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau paid tribute to the late actor.
“I have just learned of the death of actor Donald Sutherland, who was a proud Canadian and a great actor who worked in the international film industry for many decades,” Trudeau said.
“This is a very sad moment. My thoughts are with Kiefer and the entire Sutherland family, as well as the artistic community across the country who have lost another great today,” Trudeau added.
Donald Sutherland, regarded as one of the most versatile film and television actors of the century by American magazine Variety, appeared in around 200 films and TV series throughout his career.
The actor received an honorary Oscar in 2017.
