Four groundbreaking surgeries have been successfully carried out at the Mohammed V Military Teaching Hospital in Rabat, marking a significant leap forward in Morocco’s military medical sector. These high-precision procedures, focused on removing tumors from the kidneys and prostate, were made possible thanks to the use of state-of-the-art robotic surgery technology—positioning the hospital at the forefront of medical innovation on the continent.
This achievement reflects the broader modernization drive led by King Mohammed VI, Supreme Commander and Chief of the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces, who continues to push for the enhancement of healthcare services within the military framework. His vision has spurred investment in advanced medical infrastructure and a focus on building stronger, more capable health institutions under the Armed Forces’ umbrella.
Colonel-Major Dr. Ameur Ahmed, head of the hospital’s kidney and urology department, described the surgeries as a major step forward, made possible by intense technical and psychological preparation. A specialized training program was launched to help surgical teams adapt to this new robotic environment—one that demands exceptional precision, deep concentration, and complete mastery of the tools involved.
Each operation was carried out under ideal conditions, strictly adhering to medical standards. The robotic system gave surgeons a detailed, high-resolution view of the surgical field, allowing for more accurate tumor removal while preserving surrounding healthy tissue. This high level of precision not only improves outcomes but also reduces bleeding risks and speeds up patient recovery time.
One of the most revolutionary aspects of this technology is its ability to let surgeons operate remotely, blending medical expertise with digital control. For doctors, this shift marks a qualitative leap in how complex conditions are treated, especially in delicate or previously high-risk cases.
Division General Dr. El Mehdi Zbir, the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer, emphasized the facility’s ongoing progress toward becoming one of Africa’s most advanced medical centers. He credited the hospital’s achievements to the strategic direction set by King Mohammed VI, whose commitment to innovation has led to the creation of a fully equipped robotic surgery unit featuring three cutting-edge operating rooms.
This technological leap not only allows the hospital to handle highly complex cases but also opens its doors to patients from other African nations. It highlights Morocco’s commitment to strengthening South-South medical cooperation, positioning the country as a regional leader in healthcare innovation.
Upgrading the capabilities of Mohammed V Military Hospital plays a key role in reinforcing Morocco’s health sovereignty. It embodies the Royal ambition to develop military medicine into a center of excellence—one that embraces innovation and responds effectively to the evolving demands of public health.
Patients who underwent the procedures were quick to express their relief and gratitude. One man, treated for prostate cancer, praised both the care he received and the warm welcome from the medical staff. He also thanked King Mohammed VI for his ongoing concern for the health of Moroccan citizens. Another patient commended the team’s expertise and dedication, noting how cutting-edge technology was harnessed to genuinely serve patients’ well-being.
