In Morocco, cyberbullying has emerged as a rampant form of psychological abuse, wreaking havoc on the mental health and self-esteem of its victims, particularly children and young adults. As digital connectivity becomes a cornerstone of modern life, the dark side of online interactions is increasingly evident, with schools often becoming the epicenter of this troubling phenomenon. Social media’s pervasive reach has only magnified the issue, leaving countless young people vulnerable to harassment that follows them everywhere.
A nationwide response to protect the vulnerable
Recognizing the urgency of the matter, Morocco has launched a large-scale initiative under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Meryem. This comprehensive program brings together influential players like the National Observatory for Children’s Rights (ONDE), the Ministry of National Education, the Digital Development Agency (ADD), the General Directorate for National Security (DGSN), and the ReSIS center. The goal is to create a safer digital ecosystem, raising awareness among students, educators, and families about the dangers of cyberbullying.
Concrete measures for lasting impact
The program, designed to span three years, sets ambitious goals. Over 6,500 teachers will receive specialized training, 2,200 middle schools will be involved, and all 12 regions of Morocco will be reached. A cornerstone of the initiative is the introduction of student ambassadors tasked with educating their peers about responsible digital behavior. To amplify its reach, the campaign will include a series of national conferences, with the inaugural event taking place on December 10 at Casablanca’s Megarama.
Simultaneously, law enforcement agencies like the DGSN and the Royal Gendarmerie are intensifying their efforts to track down perpetrators of online harassment. Victims and their families are also being encouraged to step forward and report incidents, ensuring that justice is served.
