Adored for his achievements in business and his breakthroughs in electric vehicles, aerospace, and artificial intelligence, American billionaire Elon Musk continues to stir debate in the United States and beyond. His recent political stances reveal what many observers see as a “political evolution,” shaped by both domestic and international events.

Through his powerful social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), which he acquired in 2022 for $44 billion, Musk has expressed views that have taken many by surprise. Once known for his progressive stance and support for liberal economic and social values, his shift toward the right has left political and media circles reeling.

Musk, who was once a vocal supporter of Democratic President Barack Obama and 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, shocked many by fully endorsing Republican candidate Donald Trump for the upcoming 2024 presidential election. According to The Wall Street Journal, Musk has even pledged $45 million per month to support Trump’s campaign.

“I fully support President Trump,” Musk announced on X, shortly after a failed assassination attempt on Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania in mid-July.

For many, this endorsement marks the end of Musk’s honeymoon with a Democratic Party they say has shifted too far to the left. It also reflects his growing support for conservative ideologies within the Republican Party.

According to Business Insider journalist Jake Lahut, Musk’s rightward tilt is the culmination of a long-brewing evolution. While he once called Trump’s 2016 nomination “embarrassing,” Musk’s current political posture is strikingly different, evidenced by recent donations solely directed toward Republican causes and candidates.

As The New York Times notes, Musk has moved from being an “idealistic supporter” of the Democrats to a staunch ally of Trump and a champion of conservative values. His growing prominence in the political arena has seen him targeted by Democrats while being celebrated as a mythic figure by Trump’s advisers. Tensions with the Biden administration over immigration, inflation, and public spending further strained his alignment with progressive policies.

Musk’s activism extends beyond U.S. borders. In Venezuela, he has been outspoken against President Nicolas Maduro, criticizing him for refusing to concede defeat in the presidential election to opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez. His consistent criticism of Maduro’s leftist regime prompted the Venezuelan government to suspend the X platform.

A similar move occurred in Brazil, where X faced suspension for failing to comply with court orders addressing concerns over political misinformation. Musk fired back, accusing Brazilian Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes of undermining free speech for political reasons.

The UK also saw Musk in hot water after comments regarding far-right riots, where he predicted a “civil war” in the country. His remarks were condemned as “unjustifiable” by British authorities.

Observers believe that Musk’s political influence will continue to spark controversy, particularly as his control over X—seen by many as a powerful political megaphone—continues to grow.
