Fewer fake banknotes were found in Morocco in 2025, continuing a trend that has lasted for several years. Bank Al-Maghrib found 4,064 counterfeit banknotes during the year. That is 10% fewer than in 2024 in both the number and value of fake notes.
The number of fake banknotes in circulation also fell. There were 1.2 counterfeit notes for every one million banknotes in circulation, down from 1.5 in 2024 and 5.2 in 2019.
Bank Al-Maghrib introduced new banknotes with stronger security features, upgraded machines used to check and sort cash, and carried out more inspections at commercial banks and private cash-sorting centres.
The central bank also continued printing high-security documents for public institutions through its Dar As-Sikkah printing facility.
During 2025, it produced more than 2.2 million biometric passports, 3.1 million pre-printed security cards, and 2.5 million personalised cards.
It also printed 69,223 firearms and hunting permits, 8,154 professional identity cards, 41.2 million transport vouchers for the National Transport and Logistics Company (SNTL), and 6.9 million vouchers for the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE).
Production included three million background check files (fiches anthropométriques), 1.68 million ten-print fingerprint cards, 1.45 million diplomas and certificates, 8.5 million postage stamps, and 2.3 million other secure documents for government institutions.
