Mohamed Ouahbi has been named head coach of Morocco’s national football team as the country prepares for the 2026 World Cup.

He replaces Walid Regragui, who led Morocco to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup – the best ever result for an African team. Ouahbi previously coached Morocco’s under-20 team to the 2025 U-20 World Cup win. FIFA said his appointment is meant to keep things moving smoothly and build on recent successes.

The Moroccan Football Federation said Ouahbi knows the local game well and has European experience with Anderlecht, which will help him guide young players into the senior team.

Ouahbi’s first task is to get the team ready quickly and keep players working well together. Morocco will play in a World Cup group with Brazil, Scotland and Haiti.

On Monday, the team trained at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, focusing on fitness and light ball work. Morocco will play two friendlies before the tournament: against Ecuador in Madrid on 27 March and Paraguay in Lens on 31 March.

The team hopes to keep improving and perform well on the world stage.
