Morocco’s regional agricultural office in Loukkos has launched an emergency operation in Ksar El Kebir to distribute animal feed to farmers hit by recent floods.

The Loukkos basin is a key area for Morocco’s dairy and sugar production. But its low-lying plains make it vulnerable to flooding during heavy rainfall.

The programme aims to protect livestock and support economic activity in a region where animal farming is the main source of income for thousands of families. Floods damage to infrastructure and rural tracks has cut off access to grazing land, making it difficult to feed herds.

The Regional Directorate of Agriculture in Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima has mobilised resources to address the logistical and feed shortages.

A total of 3,750 quintals of compound feed has been scheduled for distribution. So far, 90.2 tonnes of fodder have been delivered. Around 600 breeders are being supported through their professional organisations.

Youssef Benesjai, head of agricultural development at ORMVAL, said the operation focuses on the communes of Souaken, Oulad Ouchih and Souk Tolba. The office is working with five local dairy cooperatives to ensure transparent and fair distribution.

Bouhaddou Mohsin, head of the animal production division, said this year’s rainfall has been well above seasonal averages. While the rain has helped replenish dams, he said it has created an immediate risk for livestock.

Free distribution of feed will continue until weather conditions improve and natural grazing areas become accessible again.
