In 2024, Morocco emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing countries for industrial design filings, according to the latest figures from the World Intellectual Property Organization. The World Intellectual Property Indicators 2025 report places Morocco alongside innovation-driven nations such as India and Indonesia, highlighting its rising prominence in design and creativity on the global stage.
The country recorded a 20.2% year-over-year increase in industrial design applications, securing its position among the world’s top 20 origins of filings. When adjusted for the size of its economy, Morocco ranked third globally, with 1,555 design filings per $100 billion of GDP, trailing only China and Italy. This impressive ranking reflects the growing maturity of Morocco’s creative and manufacturing sectors, which are increasingly leveraging intellectual property to protect and commercialize their innovations.
The Moroccan Office of Industrial and Commercial Property (OMPIC) confirmed the country’s strong momentum, reporting a 19.8% surge in registrations in 2024. This puts Morocco among the most dynamic national IP offices worldwide, with growth rates comparable to India (+27.9%) and the United States (+26.7%).
In total, 6,818 industrial designs were filed in Morocco last year—a 26% jump from 2023. Notably, nearly 80% of these filings came from Moroccan applicants, indicating a rising awareness among local businesses and creators of the value of protecting their designs. The data signals a shift toward more strategic use of intellectual property by domestic industries.
Packaging and containers topped the list of design categories, followed by ornamental objects, building components, and items related to clothing and haberdashery. These trends highlight Morocco’s diverse industrial base and the increasing importance of design in product development and brand differentiation.
The report also sheds light on Morocco’s broader economic progress. Over the past decade, the country’s GDP per capita has risen by 215%, marking the second-fastest growth globally after the United Kingdom. This rapid economic evolution adds further context to Morocco’s innovation surge, suggesting a strong correlation between rising income levels and investment in creativity, design, and intellectual property.
As global competition intensifies, Morocco’s focus on protecting design and fostering innovation could become a key driver of its long-term economic resilience and global competitiveness.
