Gotion Power breaks ground on major battery plant in Morocco

Gotion Power Morocco, a subsidiary of the Chinese-European battery maker Gotion High Tech, is about to begin construction of its battery megafactory near Kénitra. The announcement came from the company’s Morocco director, Khalid Qalam, during a conference in Rabat.

The project, rooted in an agreement signed in June 2024, involves an investment of over 60 billion dirhams. It marks the launch of Africa’s first gigafactory dedicated to electric vehicle batteries. Production is expected to start in the third quarter of 2026.

The initial development phase represents a 1.3 billion dollar investment, enabling an output of 20 gigawatts. An agreement with the Moroccan government allows for future expansion up to 40 gigawatts.

Beyond batteries, the plant will also manufacture cathodes and anodes, with most of the output earmarked for export to Europe. Several orders have already been secured on that front.
