Volvo Trucks, founded in Sweden in 1929, is a global leader in manufacturing trucks, buses, construction equipment, and electric solutions. With a reputation for prioritizing customer satisfaction, societal benefit, and environmental consciousness, the company has become a dominant force across 130 countries. As of 2023, Volvo Trucks employs over 104,000 people and operates 2,300 sales points, having sold more than one million vehicles worldwide.
The company is now pushing hard into electrification, aiming to balance a robust, safe driving experience with intuitive ergonomics and a strong commitment to the environment. Volvo’s ambitions are significant: to become the undisputed leader in regional transportation with high-performing electric solutions and to reach net-zero emissions by 2040. By this deadline, Volvo Trucks plans to only offer vehicles powered by carbon-neutral alternatives. As part of this journey, the company aims to reduce CO2 emissions from its trucks by 50% by 2030. A pioneer in electric trucks, Volvo currently holds 50% of the market share in Europe and North America, with over 7,000 electric trucks sold, 1,000 clients served, and operations in 45 countries. “Sustainability is part of our culture,” the brand proudly states.
Volvo Trucks began its Moroccan operations in 2001 as a subsidiary of the Volvo Group, and by 2023, it set a local record, delivering more than 100 buses and 600 trucks. Goran Travancic, Managing Director of Volvo Morocco, emphasized the company’s commitment to addressing global challenges like climate change and biodiversity loss. “Volvo is not just a name, it’s a promise—for the planet and future generations,” he stated, reiterating Volvo’s desire to play a key role in Morocco’s evolving market.
In this context, Volvo Trucks hosted the first edition of the Greendays event, creating a platform for key players to discuss solutions for Morocco’s energy transformation. This gathering is set to establish a community of regular dialogue to ensure a cohesive approach to the country’s energy transition. Travancic also noted the importance of partnerships, stating that Volvo has forged strong strategic alliances with local entities to strengthen the brand’s presence and foster a dynamic ecosystem capable of adapting to local challenges.
One such partnership is with Solar Power, a 100% Moroccan company and part of Green Tech Partners, which specializes in multi-energy solutions for energy transition and decarbonization. Solar Power plays a role in all stages of energy project implementation, from preliminary studies on energy efficiency to reducing carbon footprints (certified by Carbone 4) and lowering electricity costs through solar photovoltaic systems. The company has completed numerous renewable energy projects across Morocco and serves over a hundred domestic and international clients. Solar Power has installed and operates more than 20MW of energy capacity across the country and provides support for electric vehicle charging stations, serving industries like transportation, hospitality, and logistics.
Volvo Trucks chose to host the first edition of Greendays at the Institut de Formation aux Métiers du Transport et de la Logistique (IFTL), a public training institution dedicated to preparing skilled professionals for the transport and logistics sector. The institute boasts cutting-edge facilities, including a 3,000-meter driving track, modern driving simulators, and virtual reality setups. The IFTL offers high-quality, diploma-awarding courses designed by industry experts, as well as services for businesses, such as assistance with workforce planning and competency management. Spread over 11,700 square meters, the institute includes 25 training rooms, co-working spaces, a 540-square-meter warehouse for training purposes, and a 150-square-meter space dedicated to heavy vehicle maintenance.
Karaouane, the Director General of IFTL, highlighted the institute’s inaugural cohort of 150 students, who are set to make a substantial contribution to the sector through their expertise and technical knowledge. “We are extremely proud of the quality of our training,” Karaouane noted, underscoring the institute’s role in shaping the future of Morocco’s logistics and transport industries.
For Volvo Trucks, the Greendays event is not just about sustainability in the abstract, but about building a lasting, meaningful impact. As Goran Travancic put it, “Partnership is the new leadership,” reflecting the need for synergy and collaboration between all stakeholders to ensure the success of such an ambitious energy transformation.
