In his annual report to the United Nations Security Council, UN Secretary-General António Guterres noted the opening of Chad’s Consulate General in Dakhla on August 14th, 2023. This consulate marks the 29th such diplomatic mission in Morocco’s southern provinces, with nearly 42% of these consulates representing African countries.
This development comes in a broader international context, where over 100 nations have expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only viable solution to resolve the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
For the third consecutive year, Guterres’ report emphasized the ongoing wave of consulate openings in Morocco’s southern provinces. These diplomatic establishments underscore the growing international endorsement of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and highlight the region’s economic appeal. Morocco’s development efforts in the area have spurred interest in opening diplomatic representations, signaling the region’s increasing geopolitical importance.
The Secretary-General’s report, presented to the Security Council, reinforces Morocco’s standing on the global stage, portraying the Moroccan Sahara as a burgeoning hub of development and stability for the Mediterranean, Atlantic, and African regions.
