A majestic 3,000-year-old cedar tree, located on Japan’s Yakushima Island, collapsed on Tuesday due to strong winds caused by Typhoon Shanshan, according to local tour guides. The 26-meter-tall cedar, known as “Yakusugi,” had a trunk circumference of approximately 8 meters and was a significant attraction in the “Shiratani Unuikyo Ravine” area, as reported by Kyodo News.
Yakushima Island, renowned for its ancient cedars, some of which are over 1,000 years old, was designated a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 1993. The island’s rich biodiversity and ancient trees draw numerous visitors each year.
Typhoon Shanshan hit the island between August 27 and 29, bringing winds of up to 169 km/h, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The powerful storm ultimately led to the demise of the iconic tree, marking a significant loss for the island’s natural heritage.
