Finnish engineering company Kalmar has signed an agreement with APM Terminals to modernize 32 straddle carriers operating at the Tanger Med port. The project, scheduled to run from the second quarter of 2025 to the first quarter of 2026, aims to extend the lifespan of these machines while enhancing their performance, reliability, and safety.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to optimize the infrastructure at MedPort Tanger, a transshipment hub that has been a key player in global trade since its opening in 2019. Serving as a crucial link between Europe, Africa, the Americas, and Asia, the port continues to strengthen its competitive edge by upgrading its equipment to meet the evolving demands of international commerce.
For Kalmar, this agreement reinforces its long-standing partnership with APM Terminals. “Reliability, safety, and productivity are at the core of Kalmar’s equipment, and this modernization program will ensure that APM Terminals’ straddle carrier fleet continues to deliver value for many years to come,” said Thomas Malmborg, President of Kalmar Services.
As Tanger Med continues to expand its capacity and global appeal, this upgrade further solidifies its role as a strategic hub for maritime trade. By investing in advanced technology, the Moroccan port remains at the forefront of logistical and environmental challenges in the shipping industry.
