King Mohammed VI launches inclusive review of Moroccan Sahara initiative

At the direction of King Mohammed VI, Morocco has taken a decisive step in reinforcing its autonomy initiative for the Moroccan Sahara by actively involving national political forces in shaping an updated, unified vision. A high-level meeting was held Monday at the Royal Cabinet, bringing together the Sovereign’s senior advisors, Taib Fassi Fihri, Omar Azziman, and Fouad Ali El Himma, with leaders of all political parties represented in both chambers of Parliament. Also attending were the Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates.

This consultation follows the King’s October 31 speech and responds to the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797. The goal: to revisit and modernize Morocco’s autonomy proposal under the framework of national sovereignty, while reinforcing its credibility on the international stage. The initiative is being pursued with a clear commitment to broad-based participation and inclusive national dialogue, in line with the King’s long-standing approach to major strategic issues.

According to a Royal Cabinet communiqué, the meeting was dedicated to the detailed development of the autonomy plan within the full scope of Morocco’s territorial integrity. Advisors to the King informed party leaders of His Majesty’s intention to consult them directly on this matter, inviting them to contribute written proposals and visions that would help refine the initiative further.

Participants unanimously welcomed the move, describing it as a moment of national cohesion and responsibility. They praised the King’s decision to involve the nation’s political leadership in crafting a renewed, detailed version of the autonomy initiative – one that guarantees the reintegration of Moroccan citizens from the Tindouf camps and allows them to actively shape their local future within the framework of a united Morocco, as emphasized in the King’s recent address.

Party leaders expressed their full support for the Sovereign’s ongoing efforts to defend Morocco’s legitimate rights and consolidate the national consensus around the Sahara. They hailed the adoption of Resolution 2797 as a key milestone, reaffirming the autonomy initiative as the only credible and realistic path forward, a position now recognized as the basis for future negotiations aimed at resolving the regional dispute.

In response to the King’s call, the party leaders pledged to submit their contributions without delay, underscoring their collective commitment to the national cause and to the values of unity, sovereignty, and responsible governance.
