Marrakech unveils major underpass ahead of AFCON 2025

As Morocco ramps up its infrastructure ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Marrakech has unveiled a major new development: a freshly completed underpass on National Road No. 7 at the city’s northwestern entrance. Opened on Wednesday, the project represents a 101.5 million dirham investment aimed at easing traffic congestion on one of the city’s most critical routes – especially during rush hour.

This new structure is part of a broader strategy to modernize Marrakech’s transportation network, designed not only to handle increased traffic during the tournament but also to support the city’s long-term economic momentum. One of its key benefits is improved access to the Sidi Ghanem industrial zone and smoother connectivity following the relocation of the central bus station to the El Azzouzia district.

At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Wali of the Marrakech-Safi region, Khatib El Hebil, was joined by other local officials who also toured another major roadwork project underway. That second initiative, currently in progress with a budget of 86.3 million dirhams, aims to streamline entry into the city via the M’Hamid neighborhood and National Road No. 8.

These upgrades reflect a deliberate push to position Marrakech as a modern, efficient host city ahead of Africa’s biggest football event, while also laying the groundwork for long-term urban development.
