Marsa Maroc handled more than 3 million containers at its terminals in Tanger Med, Casablanca and Agadir for the first time. The group moved 3.026 million TEUs across the three terminals. Its equity-adjusted volume reached 2.173 million TEUs, equal to 4.6% of container traffic in the region.
Marsa Maroc also kept its fourth-place position among African container operators for a third year in a row.
The growth comes as global container traffic continues to rise. Ports around the world handled 994 million TEUs, up 6.5% from the previous year. Major terminal operators grew their equity-adjusted volumes by an average of 8.9%.
Investment is also increasing across the industry. Capital spending by the operators covered in the data rose by 23%, with companies putting more money into new terminals, infrastructure and efforts to cut emissions.
Marsa Maroc is also preparing for a major expansion at Nador West Med.
The East Terminal, developed with Terminal Investment Limited, has completed its operational tests and is ready to receive commercial ships.
The West Terminal is being developed with CMA CGM.
The two terminals will add more than 5 million TEUs of combined capacity. The wider Nador West Med complex involves MAD 51bn ($5.1bn) in public and private investment.
PSA International remained the world’s largest terminal operator by equity-adjusted throughput, with 69.9 million TEUs, up 5.3%.
APM Terminals was the largest operator in Africa, handling 14.236 million TEUs in total and 9.508 million TEUs on an equity-adjusted basis. That gave it 20.2% of regional traffic.
MSC Group, including Terminal Investment Limited and AGL, ranked second in Africa with 13.395 million total TEUs and 7.540 million equity-adjusted TEUs.
Transnet National Ports Authority ranked third, with 4.473 million TEUs and a 9.5% share of regional traffic.
CMA CGM handled 3.424 million TEUs in the region, including 1.905 million equity-adjusted TEUs, giving it a 4.1% share.
