Moroccan caftans dazzle in Dreux at cultural showcase

Moroccan fashion took center stage Friday night in Dreux, captivating audiences with a remarkable runway show held as part of the Salon du Maroc. The event, dedicated to showcasing the cultural richness of Morocco’s diverse regions, featured the work of designer Fatim Zahra Filali Idrissi, the creative force behind Maison Fatim.

Her collection, titled “From Rif to the Sahara: The Soul of the Moroccan Caftan,” offered a visual journey through the regional identities of the kingdom. Each garment—adorned with intricate embroidery, delicate gold thread, and embedded gemstones—seemed to tell a story, weaving together themes of heritage and modern reinterpretation.

The show moved seamlessly between modern designs and historical pieces, including caftans more than 80 years old. These heirloom garments, passed down through generations, stood as rare and moving testaments to the enduring tradition of Moroccan craftsmanship. One such dress, inherited from mother to daughter, embodied both the emotional resonance and exceptional skill that define the caftan.

This celebration of Moroccan textile heritage was part of a broader cultural initiative, “The Year of Morocco in Dreux,” launched in January. The program honors the deep historical and social ties between Morocco and the French town of Dreux, where nearly 17 percent of residents have Moroccan roots.

Following the fashion show, the evening continued with a gala dinner that brought together two culinary talents. Moroccan chef Khalid Zahir and French pastry master Alexis Beaufils, World Champion of Sweet Arts, joined forces to craft a four-handed culinary experience. Their collaborative menu reflected the rich, intertwined culinary traditions of both nations.

The Salon du Maroc, which opened Wednesday and runs through May 25, offers a wide-ranging celebration of Moroccan culture. The program includes exhibitions of traditional crafts, culinary showcases, and a spotlight on the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region. The festivities will continue throughout the year, with events spanning the economic, sports, and cultural spheres.
