Moroccan startups shine in Orange’s social innovation prize

Orange Morocco has announced the winners of the 15th edition of the Orange Social Venture Prize for Africa and the Middle East. In this ninth Moroccan round, four startups—DeepLeaf, Smartglobe, Sand To Green, and Mamabox—stood out from a record 381 applications, with nearly half led by women entrepreneurs.

The competition, which highlights projects with strong social or environmental impact, culminated in an unusual showdown called “POESAM in The Ring.” In a boxing-inspired format, eleven finalists pitched their ideas before a panel of experts from finance, technology, and innovation.

DeepLeaf claimed first place. The startup uses artificial intelligence to detect more than 700 plant and fruit anomalies through simple photos, then recommends tailored treatments. By boosting crop performance while reducing waste, the technology is a step toward more sustainable farming.

Second place went to Smartglobe, which developed a platform that allows buildings to monitor and manage energy consumption in real time. The customizable dashboard helps cut both costs and carbon emissions.

Sand To Green took third with its agroforestry modeling system designed for degraded lands. Its regenerative approach aims to restore ecosystems while building a more resilient and profitable agriculture.

The jury’s special award, the Coup de Cœur, went to Mamabox, a multilingual app that provides free, medically verified support for young parents—from pregnancy through a child’s early years.

All four Moroccan winners will move on to the international finals of the POESAM, which brings together projects from 17 countries across Africa and the Middle East. Several of them will also join the Orange Fab acceleration program within the Orange Digital Center.

Since its launch in Morocco in 2017, the prize has supported nearly 400 startups. Year after year, it reaffirms Orange Morocco’s commitment to driving innovation with a social purpose.
