As Morocco accelerates its digital transformation, cybersecurity risks are mounting. This is the key takeaway from a new report unveiled by global cybersecurity firm Kaspersky during GITEX Africa Morocco, held in Marrakech. According to data from the Kaspersky Security Network, Morocco now ranks among the most targeted African countries for cyberattacks, alongside Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.

In 2024, 12.6 million web-based threats were detected in Morocco, placing it third on the continent behind Kenya (20 million) and South Africa (17 million). These online threats typically include redirections to malicious websites, fraudulent downloads, and exploits targeting unpatched vulnerabilities in browsers or operating systems.

However, online attacks are just part of the story. The report also highlights a worrying increase in local threats — those that execute directly on devices. These are often transmitted via USB drives, encrypted files, or complex installations. Morocco is among the countries showing the highest increase in this type of malware, along with Senegal and Ethiopia.

A further concern is the rise of data theft attacks, particularly spyware and password stealers. Spyware — malicious programs that monitor user activity and harvest personal data — rose by 14% across Africa. Meanwhile, password-stealing malware surged by 26%, with Morocco listed as one of the most affected countries.

Kaspersky analysts attribute this trend to an ecosystem undergoing rapid digital growth but lacking sufficient protection. In Morocco, digitalization of businesses and the booming use of online financial services among the population have created new vulnerabilities. Low digital literacy, combined with underinvestment in cybersecurity tools and training, makes both individuals and companies easy targets.

To counter these growing threats, Kaspersky urges stronger cybersecurity measures at every level. For individuals, this means using complex passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, avoiding suspicious links, and installing timely software updates. For companies, the use of enterprise-grade solutions such as Kaspersky NEXT EDR Expert is recommended to monitor all endpoints, detect advanced threats, and automate threat response.

As Morocco positions itself as a future digital hub for Africa, cybersecurity is becoming a non-negotiable foundation. To realize that vision, innovation must go hand-in-hand with robust digital protection.
