Morocco has made significant progress in the 2024 edition of the Global Innovation Index (GII), moving up four places to rank 66th among 133 evaluated economies, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), as announced by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The country stands out for its exceptional performance in industrial design filings, where it ranks first globally for industrial design applications filed by origin and as a percentage of GDP. This achievement reflects Morocco’s growing prominence in the field of intellectual property, particularly in intangible assets. Globally, the country is ranked 11th for intangible assets.
In addition to topping the rankings for industrial design filings, Morocco holds the 30th position for trademark filings and is 59th for patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), both measured by origin and as a percentage of GDP.
The GII 2024 report highlights Morocco’s impressive ability to transform investments into high-performing innovative products and services. The country now ranks 47th in terms of innovation outcomes, an eight-place jump compared to the previous edition.
Regionally, Morocco ranks 6th among 38 lower-middle-income countries and 9th within the 18 nations of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
This improved performance is attributed to the concerted efforts of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Moroccan Office of Industrial and Commercial Property (OMPIC). Their collaboration with various partners has helped protect and enhance industrial and commercial property, fostering a robust innovation environment that contributes to the country’s economic development.
Now in its 17th edition, the Global Innovation Index serves as a key reference for assessing the performance of global innovation ecosystems. It provides both qualitative and quantitative analysis across several key indicators, including institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, business sophistication, knowledge and technology outputs, and creative outputs.
