Morocco declares October 31 “Unity Day” to celebrate national cohesion

In a move rich with symbolic weight, King Mohammed VI has officially declared October 31 as Morocco’s “Unity Day,” according to a statement issued Tuesday by the Royal Cabinet.

This new national holiday is designed to deepen the country’s sense of unity and national identity, reflecting the enduring commitment of the Moroccan people to the territorial integrity of the kingdom, particularly with regard to the ongoing issue of the Moroccan Sahara. The creation of Unity Day is part of a broader vision to reaffirm historical continuity and the unwavering national stance in support of Morocco’s sovereignty over the region.

Set to become a permanent fixture on the national calendar, Unity Day will serve as a unifying moment of collective reflection, reinforcing values such as loyalty, solidarity, and allegiance to Morocco’s core principles. It will stand as a testament to the spirit of national mobilization that the monarchy has long embodied.

The official communiqué highlighted the historical context behind the decision. It pointed to recent developments in the national cause, notably the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797/2025, which was addressed in King Mohammed VI’s latest speech to the nation. In light of this turning point, October 31 will not only be celebrated as Unity Day, but will also become an occasion on which the King may grant royal pardons.

The name chosen for this new holiday, “Unity Day,” is meant to evoke Morocco’s steadfast commitment to its national cohesion and territorial sovereignty. The day will be marked as an opportunity for Moroccans across the country to express their attachment to the kingdom’s sacred principles and their unwavering support for its legitimate rights.

In a related decision, the structure of royal addresses to the nation is also being updated. Moving forward, the King’s formal speeches will be delivered on two fixed occasions each year: during the celebration of Throne Day and at the official opening of Parliament. However, the monarch reserves the right to speak to the nation at any time, should circumstances warrant it.

Additionally, the upcoming celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the historic Green March will proceed as planned, though no royal speech will be delivered on that specific occasion.

With the creation of Unity Day, King Mohammed VI reinforces a message of cohesion and continuity—reaffirming national unity as a central pillar of Morocco’s identity and future.
