Morocco has taken a significant step forward in modernizing its prison services with the nationwide rollout of the digital platform Ziara. As of March 10, 2025, all correctional facilities across the country are now equipped with this system, marking a major shift toward greater efficiency and transparency in organizing inmate visits.
Initially piloted at the Ain Sebaâ penitentiary complex in Casablanca, Ziara proved successful before being expanded to the entire prison network. To ensure a seamless transition, the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) implemented a comprehensive plan, including training prison staff, setting up necessary logistical infrastructure, and raising awareness among inmates and their families.
Accessible through ziara.dgapr.gov.ma, the platform allows visitors to schedule appointments online, eliminating overcrowding, reducing long wait times, and streamlining the visitation process. It also provides key information on entry requirements and necessary documentation for accessing correctional facilities.
Developed with support from the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, along with the Digital Development Agency (ADD), Ziara aligns with Morocco’s broader strategy to digitize public services. Built with modern technical standards, the platform aims to make prison services more accessible and transparent.
Beyond its development, the ADD has played a crucial role in providing technical support and training DGAPR teams responsible for managing the system. In the future, additional services may be integrated, such as an online purchasing option for inmates.
Recognizing the vital role of family connections in the reintegration process, the DGAPR is encouraging families to use Ziara for booking visits. Meanwhile, prison facilities remain available to assist those needing help with the transition, ensuring a smooth adoption of this new system.
