Morocco’s industrial sector continues to assert itself as a driving force behind the nation’s economic growth, according to Ryad Mezzour, Minister of Industry and Trade. During his keynote speech at the second edition of the National Industry Day (JNI) in Benguerir, Mezzour highlighted the remarkable expansion of Moroccan industry over the past two decades. The event, themed “Launching a New Industrial Era Driven by Sovereignty, A Royal Vision Serving Citizens and Regions,” showcased the extraordinary progress Morocco has achieved in industrial development.

Impressive growth and milestones

In his address, Mezzour revealed some striking figures that underline the country’s industrial evolution. “Morocco now produces one car every minute,” he announced, a testament to the country’s rapid rise in automotive manufacturing. Over the years, the industry’s total turnover has multiplied fourfold, leaping from 185 billion dirhams in 1999 to a staggering 800 billion dirhams in 2023. Exports have surged in tandem, increasing from 61 billion dirhams to 377 billion dirhams during the same period.

“These achievements reflect Morocco’s concerted efforts to position its industry as a pillar of job creation and economic growth,” Mezzour remarked. He also emphasized the sector’s role in generating employment, particularly in promoting gender inclusivity. Today, women occupy 44% of industrial jobs, including technical fields such as engineering and top-level management, underscoring the industry’s commitment to empowerment.

Automotive industry leading the charge

The automotive sector stands out as a key driver of Morocco’s industrial success. In 2023, the industry generated 150 billion dirhams in revenue, positioning Morocco as Africa’s leading car manufacturer. With a local integration rate of 69%, the country now ranks among the top global players, rivaling industrial giants like China. The rapid growth of the automotive value chain, especially in the development of batteries, signals significant potential for future expansion.

Mezzour also highlighted that Moroccan industry currently contributes 1 billion dirhams in exports daily, with 90% of these goods being processed products. By 2035, Morocco aims to achieve 100% in complex industries, further solidifying its status as an industrial powerhouse.

Royal Vision at the core of industrial development

The success of Morocco’s industrial sector is deeply rooted in a Royal vision that emphasizes industrial development as a means of serving citizens and boosting regional economies. This vision has turned Morocco into a strategic hub for industrial investments and exports, with its growing industrial sector seen as an essential driver of the country’s economic future.

With the continued expansion of key sectors like automotive, and initiatives to enhance local integration and technological advancement, Morocco is poised to remain a leader in Africa’s industrial landscape and a formidable competitor on the global stage.
