At the COP29 summit in Baku, Morocco solidified its role as a global leader in the race toward carbon neutrality by ranking 8th worldwide in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2025. This recognition highlights the country’s commitment to sustainable development and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, placing it ahead of many traditionally green nations.
Morocco’s strong position in the CCPI is attributed to its ambitious renewable energy goals and groundbreaking projects in solar and wind energy. The report commends Morocco’s target of achieving 52% renewable energy in its national mix by 2030, a milestone underscoring the nation’s dedication to combating climate change.
Topping the rankings in Africa and the Arab world, Morocco has also outperformed countries like Norway (9th), Sweden (11th), and even Germany (16th) in global efforts to decarbonize. The CCPI, led by Denmark in 4th place (with the top three spots intentionally left vacant to signify a lack of true frontrunners), reflects Morocco’s steady climb—it advanced one position from its 2024 ranking.
The Climate Change Performance Index evaluates 63 countries and the EU bloc, which together account for over 90% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Rankings are based on four key criteria:
- Greenhouse gas emissions
- Renewable energy adoption
- Energy use efficiency
- Climate policy implementation
This independent index provides a comprehensive assessment of how nations are addressing the climate crisis.
