Morocco secures new term on FAO Council, strengthening role in global food policy

Morocco has secured a renewed seat on the Council of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) following the 44th session of the FAO Conference held in Rome. This new mandate will begin on July 1, 2026, and continue until the close of the organization’s 46th session in 2029.

Youssef Balla, Morocco’s ambassador and permanent representative to the UN agencies based in Rome, was confirmed to represent the country. This re-election cements Morocco’s role as one of the twelve nations tasked with representing the African region within the FAO’s executive council.

Morocco first joined the Council in June 2023, with its initial term set to conclude in mid-2026. However, the renewed confidence expressed by fellow African member states will allow Morocco to continue its active involvement for another three years. This decision reflects widespread recognition of Morocco’s ongoing efforts to promote food security, sustainable agricultural development, and the strengthening of South-South cooperation across Africa.

The FAO Council plays a crucial role in shaping the governance of the organization. Comprising 49 member countries, the Council is responsible for overseeing and steering the FAO’s activities between its major conferences. Morocco’s continued presence within this strategic body ensures that its voice remains influential in global discussions on food systems, agricultural challenges, and sustainable development.
