Morocco seeks historic victory against Nigeria in Women’s Africa Cup final

Morocco is set to make history once again this Saturday in Rabat, as its national women’s team prepares to compete in the final of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations for the second tournament in a row. With the home crowd behind them at the Olympic Stadium, the Atlas Lionesses will try to claim their first-ever continental title.

But standing in their way is a formidable opponent: Nigeria, the most decorated team in the competition’s history with nine championships to their name. The matchup carries more than just high stakes—it’s also fueled by unfinished business. Two years ago, Morocco shocked the continent by eliminating the Super Falcons in the semifinals. That stunning upset is still fresh in the minds of the Nigerian squad, who arrive in Rabat looking for revenge.

After falling just short in the 2022 final, Morocco enters this year’s championship match with more maturity and momentum. Their recent progress on the African stage has been undeniable, with their World Cup appearance last year marking a turning point in their international rise. That experience has helped shape a more confident and resilient side.

Their journey to the 2024 final has only reinforced that growth. Topping Group A with a draw against Zambia (2-2) and wins over DR Congo (4-2) and Senegal (1-0), Morocco continued their campaign by dispatching Mali in the quarterfinals (3-1). In the semis, they edged past Ghana in a dramatic shootout after a tense 1-1 draw in extra time.

The championship match will be officiated by Namibian referee Antsino Twanyanyukwa, with assistance from Rwanda’s Alice Umutesi and Senegal’s Tabara Mbodji.

Kickoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. local time (GMT+1) at Rabat’s Olympic Stadium. Meanwhile, the third-place playoff between Ghana and South Africa will take place the night before in Casablanca.
